This exceed the cash value of tho cotton crop by $,000 ,000. Ilon.IIush J.Jewetti already be in boomed by some Democratic pa pers in Ohio as tho Democratic candi data tor rresident in -1681. The Legislature of Tennessee has passed a law prohibitins tho Bale of toy pjsioiain that State. Similar measures ' re pendins in Xcw York,- Wisconsin and other States. Col. Marsh T. Polk, the defaulting treasurer of Tennessee, who is in jail at Kanhville. cannot speak abye a whis. per. He is emaciated, dispirited, and evidently getting worse. It is related that Senator Tabor, of Clor:ulo. rising to makiv his maiden .jeech. paid : 'Mr. President, I am p tired with tho gentleman from Hamp ton, Mr. South Carolina." m. ; ; According to Si ate Senator Linney the sera discovered in Alexander coun ty, known as Hiddenite. is so valuable that "a junebuj; could fly away with a thousand dollars worth of it." Wendell Phillip3, when asked his opinion of Governor Butler, laconically: answered: "I don't think he can swal low Hunker Hill.'' But lVilIips and But er both swallowed the nero. Chicago seems to be in a bad way. Omroi ihe journals s.iys, 'lhe city is iu debt; it cannot care for its streets; the pay of its official is negiftrly ; the po lice force is not more than one half what it should be." Sir Mosrs Montefiore, the noted ihil.'inthropist of Eng and, will.be a c -itury old next jear. There is a m iTement on foot among: the Hebrews ofXewYrk to pres-nt him with a ceateunial tift of some kind. The ex portal ion ot frozen meat from Annralia to England has been a failure, the loss on th! first ship-load having ben about 15.000. Sheep raised in Utah and Wyoming are sold every da in Iiundon and brinj? gtxKl prices. - The State of Illinoi-i is not only the first in rar.k as an agricultural State, as having the largest number of farms S56C00, to-wit, iu round numbers but aim stands iirst hs having the largest number of farms containing 1,000 acres or more. 1 It is currently believed in Kansas that the present Senato of that Slate contains five candidates for Governor e'even candidates tor United States S nator, and two for Judge of the Su preme Court, while two want to gov abroad. Gor. Blackburn, ft Kentucky, is on record as the champion pardoner of the country. In eighteen months, accord ing to his own statement, ho pardoned 505 convicts, or more than twenty-eight every month. This beats even the un tiring efforts of Stephens, of Georgia. . The Xcw York World characterizes the vote of tho eight Democratic; Sena tors who assisted in the passage of the tariff bill as a "leap in the dark." Mesrs Bajanl. Barrow. Brown, Davis of West Virginia, Gorman. Jackson and McPhersonaro the ofiu-nders. The orchard products ol the United S ais fyr lbSf are valued in . the lasl c nug 154. In 1870 they wi re ove $47,000,000. This slight in crease was mostly in Southern State?, crops in tho Northern fruit-growing j States being for 160 below an average. Tho Washington correspondent of the Boston Tost rinds Mr. Carlisle -far bad" in the race for the Speakership of the next House. A careful computa tion eires Mr. Carlisle about 115 votes on the first ballot of the caucus, and Mr. Randall between 50 and CO, with about Uacatteriijg. The dog Uw in Indiana creates a fund out of which losses of hheep killed by doga are regularly paid, and besides that contributes $100,000 a year to - the chool fund. Dogs in the South are bov tha law. They are under the rs Pedal care i and protection of the State r 1 1 1 , 1 Li VOL. VII. Gov. Bate, of Tennessee, recommends the appointment of a competent colored man as assistant superintendent of pub lic instruction for -the State, his duties to bo confined to the colored race. Many colored men have already cal.od on the Governor and thanked him for tho suggesting. Beyond the Mississippi river there are 1.200.000 sonare miles riot settled bv white men. Two hundred and forty thousand square miles of this area are within Indian reservations, while the rest, ' for the most part consists of mountainous tracts, inaccessible or sterile lands and arid regions whiob cannot be irrigated. Ill Here is an item of interest for the New York " Tribune and InUr-Ocean: Of the 730 the Chicago murders re- corded for the country last year, 212 were committed in the Southern States and 231 were committed in thejState of New York alone. It appears rnoreover that, of the executions for murder, half ot them took place in tho South', "" ! j There was very little prospect that the unprecedented immigration fit last year would keep up duing 1883, but the reports of January show a greater fall ing off than was anticipated.! I Tn Janu ary. 1S82, the number of immigrants arriving at all the ports of itie United States wtfs 18,459, while in January, 1883, the arrivals were only 12,040. ' . 1 1 -The disappearance ol fish from many of our streams is due to jthe facfc that the channels of the streams are being filled up by washings frpm the hills. The ruthless war that has been waged upon our forests forihe (past jhundred years is now beginning to be seriously f lt in many ways. The disapnearrnce of the fish is not the lest of the resulting evils. ' i Tho Supreme Court has been by ref oliilinii rvqu'siul to decide what Hnioiini f limo constitutes rt i Igi-lativ? isessi' n jo Other word as the session iji to be sixty days, whethej Sundays are "days." A'etc'o- and Observer. : Two years ago during the j session o( Uie last legislature, the Keview main tained that Sunday.should not be in cluded iu the cnumeratjon ot the sixty days, and so wu stiil maintain. It is evident that the constitution- coutcm plated sixty-week days, jnasmuch as it says(Art.2. Se. 2rt): The members .f th General Assembly, for the term for which they are elected, shaU 're ceive n a compensation for their ser-- vices the sum of four dollars! per day for each day of their services, fof a pe riod not exceeding sixty das."t This, it seems to us. is very plain. Sunday is not; and cannot be considered a clay of sessions, neither as a day for whieh payment can-be made. Sixty working das is tho limit and no pay for Sun days. This, we'll bet a ling Pigeon River apple will be thej decision of the Supreme Court if the case is over car ried there. ; ! ; . - , LOCAL NEWS. INDEX TO NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
